700-Acre Wildfire Near Whitman-Spokane County Line Nearing Full Containment

CHENEY, WA – The Siegel Fire, which began on July 2 about 14 miles south of Cheney, has burned approximately 700 acres and is now 93% contained, according to fire officials. Crews are continuing full suppression efforts, with mop-up and rehabilitation work underway.

The fire has been burning primarily between Bonnie Lake and South Texas Ferry Road, just north of the Whitman-Spokane County line. It spread rapidly after ignition due to winds associated with a passing cold front. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, though it has been determined to be human-caused.

On Sunday, crews used handheld thermal imaging cameras known as PALM-IR units to detect residual heat within 100 feet of the fire line. These infrared tools can identify hot spots not visible to the naked eye, helping firefighters locate and extinguish hidden hazards. The technology enhances safety for both personnel and nearby communities.

As of the most recent reports, 205 personnel remain assigned to the fire. Work continues today to mop up hot spots and remove hoses and other equipment used during suppression operations. Rehab activities are also ongoing, particularly in areas affected by burnout operations on the north end of the fire.

There have been no reported injuries, and safety continues to be a priority. Evacuation levels were downgraded Saturday evening, with Level 2 orders reduced to Level 1 as of 8:00 p.m. on July 5.
