LEWISTON, ID — Idaho Fish and Game is calling on anglers to help curb the spread of walleye in critical salmon and steelhead habitats by killing and reporting any walleye caught in these waters.
According to the agency, walleye are effective predators that pose a threat to both wild and hatchery juvenile salmon and steelhead. Their presence in rivers where these native fish migrate and spawn is a growing concern for fishery managers.
In 2024, anglers reported catching 80 walleye in the Snake River between Hells Canyon Dam and Lewiston, as well as the Salmon River from Riggins to the mouth. Most fish measured between 15 and 18 inches, with a few ranging up to 30 inches.
“Angler reports are critical,” said officials. “They help us track where walleye are spreading and how frequently they’re being caught.”
Fish and Game is asking anglers who catch walleye in the Lower Snake, Clearwater, or Salmon rivers to kill the fish, take a photo, and report it to Fish and Game biologist Marika Dobos. She can be reached at the Lewiston Regional Office by email at marika.dobos@idfg.idaho.gov or by phone at (208) 750-4228.
