SMELTERVILLE, ID – The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) have announced the construction of a new 26-site tent-only campground along the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, a 73-mile paved trail stretching from Mullan to Plummer in North Idaho.
Designed specifically for non-motorized travelers, the campground will provide a peaceful overnight experience for trail users, particularly cyclists. Key features will include secure bike parking, potable water, a shower house, E-bike charging stations, and hammock posts.
The project is located just north of the Shoshone County Airport on approximately 140 acres of land owned by DEQ. That land was formerly part of the Bunker Hill Superfund site and has now been leased to IDPR under a land-use transfer agreement. Officials say the project supports the reuse of rehabilitated property for public recreation and economic benefit.
“The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is one of the most scenic pathways in the country,” IDPR stated in a release. “This project provides visitors a safe, dedicated place to camp and experience the beauty of North Idaho in a low-impact, sustainable way.”
The site is located near trail-accessible towns where visitors can find supplies, food, and other services. Construction is underway and expected to be completed later this year.
