POMEROY, WA – The Garfield County Fire District #1 has announced a burn ban for all lands under its protection, effective July 6 at midnight through September 30, 2025. The seasonal restriction comes amid heightened wildfire risk during the region’s hot and dry summer months.
Officials warn that escaped outdoor burning poses a serious threat to public safety, private property, and wildlife habitats. The ban aims to reduce wildfire incidents and ease the burden on emergency response resources.
What is allowed during the ban:
- Use of outdoor stoves, BBQs, and smokers powered by natural gas, propane, pellets, or briquettes.
What is prohibited:
- Recreational fires in any type of commercially made or approved fire pits.
- Agricultural burns, even those requiring Department of Ecology permits.
- Yard waste or pile burns outside city limits and within the Urban Growth Area (UGA), which are always prohibited.
- Any incendiary devices, including fireworks, exploding targets, sky lanterns, or tracer ammunition.
While some wildfires start from natural causes such as lightning, fire officials emphasize that human activity is the leading cause. Unattended outdoor fires, poorly maintained home sites, and sparks from equipment or vehicles are cited as the top contributors to wildland and home fires.
