BOISE, ID – With summer in full swing, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is encouraging residents to recognize and support designated drivers as part of a statewide effort to prevent impaired driving.
Through its SHIFT Idaho campaign, ITD is reminding the public that planning ahead can save lives. Whether choosing to be the designated driver or arranging for a sober ride through a friend or ride-share service, taking responsibility before drinking begins is a key step in avoiding tragedies on the road.
“Not every hero wears a cape – some just hold the keys,” said Josephine Middleton, ITD’s Highway Safety Manager. “We are so grateful for all those unsung heroes who help people get home, whether it’s the designated driver, the bartender who helps order a rideshare, or the friend who answers that late night call to pick someone up from the party. These simple acts save lives.”
In addition to public awareness efforts, law enforcement agencies statewide are conducting increased DUI patrols through July 13. The extra enforcement is intended to deter impaired driving during a period known for summer parties and holiday travel. During a similar campaign last July, officers made 30 DUI arrests, issued 486 speeding citations, and cited 94 drivers for not carrying insurance.
The Office of Highway Safety is urging Idahoans to look out for one another and make responsible choices.
“Thanks to the designated drivers and officers out there keeping our roads safe… so everyone can make it home this summer,” Middleton said.
