Pullman Council Weighs Fireworks Ban at WSU Games, Citing Concerns on College Hill

PULLMAN, WA – Pullman City Council will explore possibly banning Washington State University from shooting fireworks at home football and baseball games.

The issue has been brought forward by senior most City Councilmember Nathan Weller.  Weller represents and lives in Ward 2 which covers the Northern portion of College Hill near campus.  He discussed his concerns about fireworks at Cougar ballgames during Tuesday night’s Pullman City Council meeting.  Weller says fireworks on campus outside of the expected 4th of July and New Year’s celebrations has been causing a significant problem in his neighborhood for years.  You can listen to his comments below.

Pullman city law generally only allows fireworks to be shot off in town around the 4th of July and New Year’s.  That code has an exemption for WSU which allows the university to discharge fireworks at sanctioned events.  Weller was joined by additional city councilmembers who agreed to explore possibly banning Cougar game fireworks but keep the current allowance for discharge during the 4th and New Year’s.  Weller went on to disagree with the argument that fireworks bring in additional money for Cougar Athletics and had a contentious exchange with mayor Francis Benjamin Tuesday night.  You can hear that with the file below.

Pullman City Council will hold a public hearing at a future meeting to hear from citizens about possibly banning fireworks at WSU football and baseball games.
