SAINT MARIES, ID – Two men from Saint Maries have been charged with eight felony counts each in connection with the unlawful killing of seven white-tailed deer in North Idaho, according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
The charges, filed June 27 by the Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office, stem from an investigation initiated after a tip was submitted to the Citizens Against Poaching hotline. The tip led conservation officers in the Panhandle Region to uncover a total of 56 alleged wildlife violations.
Officials allege that all seven deer, including three classified as trophy bucks, were killed unlawfully in November 2024. Five of the deer were reportedly taken within a 24-hour period. All were shot outside legal hunting hours, and meat from three of the deer was left to waste — a violation that carries additional penalties.
Because the investigation is ongoing, Idaho Fish and Game has not released the names of the defendants or further details at this time. More information may be made available once the legal process concludes.
Fish and Game officials thanked the public for reporting suspicious activity and reminded residents that credible tips can lead to charges in wildlife crime cases. Citizens who observe illegal activity involving fish or wildlife are encouraged to contact the Citizens Against Poaching hotline at 1-800-632-5999 or report information online. Rewards may be offered for information leading to charges.
