CLARKSTON, WA – A fast-moving wildfire near Evans Road, west of Clarkston, threatened homes, livestock, and property Wednesday afternoon, marking the second consecutive day of wildland fire activity in the Lewis-Clark Valley.
The fire began shortly after 12:30 p.m. and rapidly grew under Red Flag conditions—characterized by high heat, low humidity, and gusty winds—pushing flames southeast toward Amity Lane. Several homes in the area were at risk.
Fire crews from multiple jurisdictions responded, including Asotin County Fire District #1, along with units from Lewiston, Clarkston, Asotin, Wheatland Fire District, Garfield County, Blue Mountain, Whitman County Fire District 14, and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
During the response, firefighters were diverted to assist a woman reported to be trapped on an ATV in the fire area. She was quickly located, medically evaluated, and found to be unharmed.
Containment was achieved around 5:00 p.m., with crews remaining on site until approximately 11:00 p.m. to monitor for hot spots. No injuries were reported.
Asotin County Fire District #1 Chief Noel Hardin credited the swift coordination among regional fire crews and aerial support from DNR—including three helicopters, two single-engine air tankers, and a bulldozer—for preventing further damage and bringing the blaze under control within a few hours.
An estimated 65 firefighters were involved in suppressing the fire. Crews are expected to continue mop-up operations and monitor the area through Thursday to prevent flare-ups.
The fire’s cause remains under investigation but is believed to be related to farm equipment.
