Washington Man Convicted of Assault with a Rifle on Coeur d’Alene Reservation

COEUR D’ALENE, ID – A federal jury in Coeur d’Alene has found Jason Bergeron, 50, of Washington, guilty of three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon following a violent encounter at a residence on the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation, Acting U.S. Attorney Justin Whatcott announced Friday.

The four-day trial concluded on July 10 in U.S. District Court, where evidence showed Bergeron drove to his ex-girlfriend’s home and opened fire with a rifle while she, her daughter, son-in-law, and three-year-old grandson were present. Bergeron reportedly fired additional rounds at the daughter and son-in-law as they fled with the child and repeatedly pointed the firearm at his ex-girlfriend, threatening to kill her.

All victims in the case are members of the Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation.

Each conviction carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release. Sentencing is scheduled for September 24, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Amanda K. Brailsford at the Coeur d’Alene federal courthouse.

Acting U.S. Attorney Whatcott praised the investigative efforts of the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Police and the FBI, as well as the support provided by the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Prosecutor and the Kootenai County Prosecutor’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bryce Ellsworth and Adam Johnson prosecuted the case.
