German Customs Uncover 1,500 Tarantulas Hidden in Cookie Packages

COLOGNE, Germany — Officers with Cologne Customs made a startling discovery at the Cologne/Bonn Airport: approximately 1,500 tarantulas were found hidden in plastic containers inside packages labeled as cookies.

The parcel, which originated in Vietnam and was destined for the Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, was intercepted about three weeks ago. Customs officials noted an unusual odor upon opening the large box, which had been declared as containing seven kilograms of cookies.

“Even though our officers regularly encounter unusual or prohibited goods from all over the world, finding around 1,500 young tarantulas packed in plastic containers was shocking—even for our most experienced staff,” said Jens Ahland, spokesperson for the Cologne Main Customs Office. “This was an exceptional seizure that also highlights the cruelty some individuals are willing to inflict on animals for profit.”

Many of the spiders did not survive the transport, which violated animal welfare regulations. The surviving specimens have been transferred to professional care.

Authorities have launched criminal proceedings against the intended recipient in Germany. According to customs regulations, animals arriving from non-EU countries must be declared, and proper import duties must be paid.

The case underscores the ongoing challenges customs officials face in preventing the illegal trade of animals under the guise of legitimate goods.
