Voluntary Removal of Artificial Colors Announced by Ice Cream Producers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recognized the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) for its commitment to eliminate artificial food dyes from ice cream and frozen dairy desserts by 2028.

The announcement was made during a public event outside the USDA headquarters, where Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins joined officials in scooping ice cream to commemorate the initiative. The voluntary commitment includes removing several certified artificial colors—Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6—from dairy products.

Secretary Rollins expressed support for the move, describing it as a positive step in promoting healthier food choices. “I appreciate IDFA members for spearheading this new initiative and finding ways to promote President Trump’s Make America Healthy Again agenda,” Rollins stated.

The event also included remarks from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary. Kennedy noted the growing public preference for natural ingredients, saying, “The American people have made it clear—they want real food, not chemicals.”

Michael Dykes, D.V.M., president and CEO of IDFA, said the decision aligns with consumer expectations and changing policy trends. “Americans are passionate about their ice cream, and the IDFA Ice Cream Commitment will ensure wholesome, indulgent ice cream products made with real milk from American dairy farmers remain a special part of our lives as state and federal policies evolve,” he said.

The IDFA’s pledge is part of broader efforts within the food industry to adapt to consumer demands for cleaner labels and fewer synthetic additives. The USDA, HHS, and FDA officials indicated continued collaboration with food producers to support similar voluntary measures.
