PORT ANGELES, WA — A small aircraft crashed Monday evening in a remote section of Olympic National Park, leaving one person dead and two others injured, according to the National Park Service.
Park rangers received a report of the crash at approximately 6:50 p.m. on July 15. The aircraft, identified as a Murphy SR3500 Moose, went down on a steep, forested slope near the Irely Lake Trailhead in the Quinault area of the park.
Emergency response was coordinated with Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Search and Rescue unit. All three individuals aboard the plane were extracted from the site and transported to a Level 1 Trauma Center.
Two of the occupants are currently being treated for injuries, while the third was pronounced deceased. Their identities have not been released.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Officials have not reported any impact to visitors in the area beyond the response operation. The public is advised to monitor park alerts for any related updates.
