AAA Warns Idaho Fatalities Rising Midway Through ‘100 Deadliest Days’

BOISE, ID  – As Idaho reaches the halfway point of the “100 Deadliest Days”—the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal crashes historically increase—AAA is sounding the alarm: traffic fatalities are trending higher this summer than last.

According to recent estimates from the Idaho Transportation Department, 49 lives have already been lost on Idaho roads during the first half of this summer stretch, compared to 40 during the same period in 2024.

“We raise awareness by sharing this information with large groups of people, but it always comes down to individual decision making,” said Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “Every year, lives and dreams are cut short by devastating crashes. We can do more to make the roads safer for all.”

AAA is urging drivers to take responsibility behind the wheel by following these safety practices:

  • Drive at safe speeds and maintain plenty of following distance.
  • Avoid aggressive behavior and sudden lane changes.
  • Get adequate rest before driving.
  • Eliminate distractions—especially cell phone use.
  • Never drive impaired.
  • Always wear a seat belt.

“Today’s vehicle technology can’t take the place of an engaged driver,” Conde added. “It’s up to each of us to commit to safety and eliminate unacceptable risk. Everyone deserves to reach their destination safely.”

With the second half of summer still ahead, AAA hopes increased awareness and personal accountability will help curb the trend and save lives.
