LEWISTON, ID – The Lewis Clark Animal Shelter has announced the launch of a new community dog training program, “PAWSITIVE START,” aimed at strengthening the bond between pet owners and their dogs while promoting responsible pet ownership.
The program will be led by local trainer V. Blair Voltz, who recently earned the Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA®) credential from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT®). This nationally recognized certification requires demonstrated experience, professional references, and the successful completion of a rigorous exam covering the science and application of canine behavior training.
PAWSITIVE START is a four-week course offered at $100 and is designed to teach foundational obedience and relationship-building skills. The curriculum includes commands like Sit, Down, Leave It, and Place, as well as leash etiquette, door manners, cooperative care, and information on dog acclimation—including the “333 rule” for new dogs. Optional one-on-one lessons will also be available based on instructor availability.
“Dog training isn’t just about teaching tricks—it’s about building a relationship,” said Voltz. “We often see dogs surrendered to the shelter for behavioral issues that could have been addressed with the right support. These classes aim to give owners the tools to create a positive, lasting bond with their companions.”
Funds raised from the course will directly support the shelter’s growing behavior and training program.
