SHELTON, WA – A black-tailed doe spotted with a child’s swim vest stuck around her neck near Shelton is now free, thanks to efforts by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
Wildlife conflict specialist Ryan McNiff responded to reports from the Mason County area after residents noticed the deer in distress. The swim vest—described as tattered and clearly not designed for animal wear—posed a potential risk to the doe’s safety.
McNiff was able to safely immobilize the deer, remove the vest, and release her back into the wild, where she promptly reunited with her fawn.
WDFW officials are using the incident to remind the public not to approach or attempt to assist wildlife without proper training or permits. Intervening without expertise can be harmful to both the animal and the person involved.
Residents who encounter wildlife in distress are encouraged to contact a permitted rehabilitator or their local WDFW regional office. More information is available at wdfw.wa.gov/species-habitats/living/injured-wildlife.
