ATHOL, ID – Idaho State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle rollover crash that occurred early Saturday morning, July 19, 2025, on U.S. Highway 95 near milepost 448 in Kootenai County.
Following a preliminary investigation, police say an 18-year-old male from Athol was driving a 1998 Jeep Cherokee northbound on US 95 around 1:45 a.m. when he failed to maintain his lane. The vehicle left the northbound side of the roadway, the driver overcorrected, and the Jeep overturned, eventually coming to rest in the right northbound lane.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene from his injuries.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the crash. Traffic was initially blocked in the northbound lanes for about 20 minutes, followed by a full closure in both directions for approximately 40 minutes to allow emergency responders to assist. The right northbound lane remained closed for an additional two hours. The roadway was fully reopened about three hours after the crash.
The Idaho State Police continue to investigate the incident.
