LEWISTON, ID — At approximately 1:56 a.m. on Sunday, the Lewiston Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a residence located at 606 Lapwai Road.
Upon arrival, fire crews observed heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the north side of the home. Authorities on scene confirmed with a renter that there were no occupants inside the residence at the time of the fire.
Firefighters began with an aggressive exterior attack, successfully knocking down a significant portion of the flames. They then transitioned to interior operations to fully extinguish the remaining fire.
Due to concerns about the structural integrity of the home—specifically a large tin roof covering the fire area—a backhoe from the City of Lewiston Public Works Department was brought in to assist. This equipment allowed firefighters to safely remove roofing material and access remaining hot spots.
There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. However, it is believed that one or more dogs may have perished in the fire.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Lewiston Fire responded with three engines, three ambulances, three chief officers, and two fire investigators. Assistance was provided by the Clarkston Fire Department under an automatic aid agreement, as well as the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office, Nez Perce County Fire Department, and the Lewiston Police Department. Responding agencies coordinated to ensure the road was safely shut down during the incident.
