Two Men Arrested in Cheney on Attempted Murder Charges

CHENEY, WA – Two men were arrested Saturday evening in Cheney on charges including attempted murder and burglary following a reported armed confrontation outside a residence.

According to the Cheney Police Department, officers responded at approximately 5:45 p.m. on July 19 to a report of a male with a handgun outside a home in the 200 block of North 3rd Street. Upon arrival, police located and detained two suspects: 46-year-old Martin Julien and 44-year-old Riley Smith.

Investigators allege that Julien, armed with a black pistol, and Smith approached the residence in an attempt to confront an occupant over a prior incident. Surveillance video and witness statements reportedly show Julien holding a firearm and aggressively pounding on the front door. The two suspects are also accused of unlawfully entering a locked common area through a shared garage.

Julien was booked into Spokane County Jail on charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and threats to kill. Smith was booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and an active misdemeanor warrant.

The Cheney Police Department stated that the investigation is ongoing in collaboration with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities are asking residents in the area to contact Crime Check if they have additional video footage of the incident.
