SEATTLE, WA – Washington Attorney General Nick Brown has filed a lawsuit against Fidelity Information Services (FIS), alleging the company unlawfully shared the personal data of over one million state residents with the federal government.
According to the complaint, FIS has contracted with the Washington Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) since 2015 to administer benefit payments for food assistance programs, including the federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the state-funded Food Assistance Program (FAP). The FAP program provides benefits to individuals who are ineligible for SNAP due to their immigration status.
Attorney General Brown claims that FIS violated its contract with the state by disclosing private information without authorization, potentially exposing vulnerable residents—particularly immigrants—to deportation efforts by federal authorities.
The lawsuit seeks to block FIS from continuing these alleged disclosures and aims to safeguard the confidentiality of individuals relying on state and federal nutrition support.
The Attorney General’s Office did not disclose the specific information shared, but emphasized that protecting the personal data of Washington residents is a critical public trust issue.
Further legal proceedings will determine whether FIS violated its contractual obligations or state data privacy laws.
