COLFAX, WA – A former Washington State University student has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after being convicted of third-degree rape.

According to the Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office, Erick Leal was sentenced following a jury trial that concluded in late May. The charge stems from a case involving a reported sexual assault, and Leal must now also register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Tessa Scholl stated the sentence was the maximum allowed under Washington State’s Adult Sentencing Guidelines, which set the range for this offense at six to twelve months.

“Jane Doe delivered an incredibly moving victim impact statement that the judge took into account when imposing the maximum sentence,” Scholl said. “I applaud her for her courage and strength in coming forward to report this crime and in moving forward to trial. She is an inspiration.”

Questions regarding the case may be directed to Senior Deputy Prosecutor Tessa Scholl.
