AAA Shares Tips to Help Idaho Drivers Conserve Fuel During Summer Travel

BOISE, ID –  As Idaho families continue to take advantage of summer travel, AAA is encouraging drivers to adopt simple habits that can improve fuel efficiency and save money at the pump.

“While gas prices are still slightly lower than they were this time last year, finding ways to stretch the fuel budget is always helpful,” said Matthew Conde, public affairs director for AAA Idaho. “Vehicles today are more fuel-efficient than ever, but even small changes in driving and maintenance can make a real difference.”

AAA recommends the following driving tips to conserve fuel:

  • Drive smoothly and avoid rapid acceleration or hard braking, which can cut fuel efficiency by up to 40% in heavy traffic.

  • Reduce highway speeds by 5–10 MPH to potentially save up to 14% on fuel.

  • Use cruise control when conditions allow to maintain consistent speeds.

  • Avoid extended idling and peak traffic times to minimize fuel waste.

  • Plan trips in advance to reduce unnecessary driving and backtracking.

  • Use the correct grade of gasoline recommended for your vehicle.

  • Carpool when possible to spread out fuel costs.

In addition to driving behavior, vehicle maintenance also plays a role:

  • Stay current on oil changes and regular maintenance.

  • Keep tires properly inflated to reduce rolling resistance.

  • Replace dirty engine air filters.

  • Don’t ignore the “check engine” light—address issues promptly.

“Choosing the right vehicle can also make a difference,” said Conde. “In general, the smallest vehicle that meets your needs will be the most economical to operate. And if you have more than one car at home, use the one that best fits the trip.”
