CLARKIA, ID – A paving project is set to begin Monday, August 4, on a section of State Highway 3 near Clarkia, according to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD). The work will take place between mileposts 55 and 58 and is expected to continue through August 14, weather permitting.

During the project, traffic will be reduced to a single lane with a pilot car guiding vehicles through the work zone. Delays are expected, especially for commercial and logging truck traffic.

“This isn’t the final product,” said Ross Farrell, regional foreman. “This overlay is meant to buy us time and provide a smoother, safer surface through winter until the full project can be completed next year.”

The current work is a short-term fix to improve the most deteriorated sections of pavement. A more comprehensive full-depth rehabilitation—including milling and complete repaving—is scheduled for 2026.

Crews from both North Idaho and north-central Idaho are teaming up to complete this phase of the project efficiently. The location near the boundary of the two regions allows for inter-district collaboration.

Drivers are urged to slow down in work zones and check 511.idaho.gov or the Idaho 511 app for real-time traffic updates and construction impacts.
