SPOKANE, WA — A 40-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday morning after reportedly exposing himself and acting erratically on a Spokane Transit Authority (STA) bus, leading to a violent struggle with deputies at the Hastings Park and Ride on North Mayfair Road.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report around 9:35 a.m. on July 29 of a male who had removed his pants and exposed his genitals while refusing to exit the bus. The suspect, identified as David V. Wyman, allegedly appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance and in a state of mental crisis.
When deputies arrived, the bus was found empty aside from Wyman, who was reportedly standing near the driver’s area and hallucinating about rattlesnakes. Officials said Wyman was sweating excessively and exhibiting signs of possible excited delirium, a condition that can result in dangerously high body temperatures and unpredictable behavior.
A deputy attempted to calmly detain Wyman, who initially appeared to comply before suddenly resisting, balling his fists, and pulling away. A struggle ensued, spilling outside the front of the bus and onto the ground. Additional deputies arrived to assist in subduing Wyman, who continued to kick, resist, and speak incoherently.
Medical personnel sedated Wyman and applied ice packs to help reduce his body temperature before transporting him to a local hospital. After being medically cleared, he was booked into the Spokane County Jail on charges of third-degree assault, resisting arrest, two counts of indecent exposure, and unlawful transit conduct.
One deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident. Others were exposed to blood or had damaged equipment, but no STA riders or employees were harmed. The case has been referred to mental health professionals for further evaluation.
