LEWISTON, ID – A fire caused significant damage to a duplex at 802 and 804 20th Street on the afternoon of July 30.
The Lewiston Fire Department was dispatched at 2:12 p.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the west side of the two-story structure. Crews initially entered the building for fire attack and a primary search. All occupants had exited safely, as confirmed by the Lewiston Police Department.
As fire conditions worsened and concerns about the building’s stability increased, crews withdrew from interior operations and shifted to a defensive approach to contain the fire and protect surrounding properties. The Lewiston Street Department and Police Department assisted with traffic and crowd control.
Water from firefighting efforts flooded the basement of a nearby property. The City’s Public Works Department responded to assist with water removal.
A partial collapse of the building required the use of a large excavator to remove damaged sections and access concealed spaces. In total, 33 personnel responded to the scene, including resources from Lewiston, Clarkston, and Asotin County fire departments. Crews remained on scene for about six hours.
Damage is estimated at $400,000. One civilian was treated for smoke inhalation. No firefighter injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
