GRANGEVILLE, ID – The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Idaho County, effective Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening, due to the threat of thunderstorms capable of producing locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and hail.
The storms are expected to impact areas across North-Central Idaho, with particular concern for flood-prone regions and steep terrain, including locations with recent wildfire burn scars. These areas are especially vulnerable to flash flooding, debris flows, and rockfalls, which may impact roadways and waterways.
Specific locations listed under the Flood Watch include Grangeville, Riggins, Shepp Ranch, Indian Creek, Mackay Bar, China Bar, Williams Creek Fire Burn Area, and Magruder Fire Burn Area.
The National Weather Service warns that excessive runoff from thunderstorms may lead to flooding in creeks, streams, and low-lying areas. In recent burn scar zones, the risk is elevated due to loose soil and reduced vegetation, increasing the likelihood of fast-moving debris flows.
Due to the current limited radar coverage in the region, NWS forecasters say rainfall intensity may be underestimated, and residents are advised to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions. The National Weather Service urges the public to be prepared to take action if Flood Warnings are issued later in the day.
Motorists and residents in affected areas should use caution, especially when traveling through canyons or near streams and drainage channels. Flood waters, rockslides, and debris could pose serious hazards.
