KAMIAH, ID – Idaho Fish and Game is investigating the illegal killing of a cow moose and her calf that occurred east of Kamiah on the evening of Saturday, July 19, between 7 and 9 p.m.
The moose carcasses were discovered in a meadow approximately 50 yards from Forest Service Road 500, near its intersection with Forest Service Road 5125. Officials believe the animals were shot from the road with a rifle. In addition to being harvested out of season, about 75 to 100 pounds of edible meat were reportedly left to waste, including a full quarter of the animal and portions of both backstraps.
The unlawful killing of two moose constitutes a felony under Idaho law. If caught, the responsible party faces a minimum fine of $1,000, a civil penalty of $4,500, and mandatory revocation of their hunting license. Moose hunting in Idaho is strictly regulated, with most hunters only eligible for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity through a controlled draw.
