Increased State Patrol Presence as WSU Students Return for Fall Semester WSP to Conduct Emphasis Patrols August 6–10

PULLMAN, WA – As students make their way back to Washington State University (WSU) for the start of the fall semester, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) is ramping up efforts to keep roadways safe. From August 6 through August 10, WSP troopers will conduct emphasis patrols targeting speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and other collision-causing violations.

The patrols will be carried out by District 4 troopers in Whitman and Adams counties, as well as District 6 troopers in Grant and Kittitas counties. These regions cover major routes frequently traveled by students heading to Pullman, including State Routes 26 and 195, and Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass.

WSP officials say the emphasis comes at a critical time, as fatal collisions have seen a sharp rise in parts of the state. District 4 has already investigated 14 fatality crashes in 2025—an alarming 180% increase over the same period in 2024, when five fatal crashes were reported.

“Speeding continues to be a leading factor in fatal crashes,” a WSP spokesperson said. “Troopers will be closely monitoring speed limits and will take immediate enforcement action against those violating them.”

The emphasis patrols also aim to address distracted and impaired driving. Troopers are urging motorists to stay off their phones and remain fully focused behind the wheel.

“Our goal is simple: to make sure students and families return to Pullman safely,” the spokesperson added. “There will be zero tolerance for impaired driving, and we’re asking everyone to make safe choices.”

Drivers traveling across the state toward WSU should expect to see an increased patrol presence and are encouraged to plan ahead, obey posted speed limits, and avoid distractions.
