IDAHO – August is shaping up to be a busy month for Idaho hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, with a host of important tag sales, season openers, and application deadlines on the calendar. Whether you’re aiming for a coveted controlled hunt tag or preparing for archery season, staying informed could mean the difference between hitting the field or sitting out.
The month kicks off with several major events on August 1, including the deadline to purchase controlled hunt tags (excluding unlimited and January hunts) and the release of sage-grouse and sandhill crane tags at 10 a.m. MDT. Just a few days later, on August 5, the second application period for deer, elk, pronghorn, and fall bear controlled hunts begins.
Here are more key dates to mark:
-
August 6: Leftover early-season controlled hunt tags go on sale
-
August 7: Second tag and returned tag sales begin
-
August 10: Deadline to apply for the second Super Hunt drawing
-
August 15: Second application period closes
-
August 25: Potential leftover controlled hunt tags released (if available)
-
August 30: General archery season opens for deer and elk in most of the state, along with seasons for cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, fall turkey, and forest grouse
As always, hunters, anglers, and trappers are urged to double-check Idaho Fish and Game’s season and rules booklets for specific dates, unit restrictions, and species regulations to ensure compliance and a successful season.
