PULLMAN, WA – Washington State University’s Information Technology Services (ITS) has ramped up security efforts in response to a rise in cybersecurity threats targeting students, faculty, and staff—just as financial aid disbursements are set to begin.

Throughout July, ITS implemented enhanced login and authentication procedures to counteract phishing attempts and account takeover threats. Some WSU community members may notice changes to their login process as part of this increased security.

Higher education institutions have become growing targets for cybercriminals. According to recent data from Educause, financial aid fraud has risen sharply in the U.S., with annual losses exceeding $100 million as of 2023—up significantly from under $10 million prior to 2020.

WSU officials urge all users to take extra precautions:

ITS warns that even one compromised account could be used to redirect financial aid or payroll deposits.

WSU community members can report concerns to the Crimson Service Desk at 509-335-4357 or via email at crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu or abuse@wsu.edu.

While much of the effort to fight cyber threats happens behind the scenes, ITS stresses that every user plays a vital role in protecting university systems and personal information.
