Man Arrested for Identity Theft After Using Stolen Debit Card at Clarkston Convenience Store

CLARKSTON, WA – A man was arrested early Tuesday morning after allegedly using a stolen debit card to make multiple purchases at a local convenience store, according to court documents filed by the Clarkston Police Department.

Joseph Orlan Heidelberger, 39, was taken into custody at approximately 3:39 a.m. on August 5 at the Nom Nom convenience store on Bridge Street. He is being held in the Asotin County Jail on suspicion of two counts each of second-degree identity theft and second-degree theft, as well as one count of second-degree possession of stolen property.

According to the arresting officer, Heidelberger was reported by a store employee who told police that he had attempted to use a debit card that had previously been flagged as stolen. The owner of the card had reported his wallet stolen from his vehicle in the Walmart parking lot the previous evening.

The documents also allege that Heidelberger had used the same card the day prior, making purchases totaling over $100.  The debit card allegedly bore visible signs of tampering, including a partially burnt backside. The last name of the card’s owner still remained visible.

During questioning, police say Heidelberger claimed someone had given him the card but could not provide a name. He also pointed to a nearby female, suggesting she knew about the card. She denied any involvement and stated she believed Heidelberger was paying with cash or a check.

According to police, the card’s owner later confirmed that six unauthorized transactions had been made using his card at Nom Nom, totaling $268.23, and one additional transaction at another business, Sharps, for $6.32.

As of Wednesday morning, Heidelberger remained in custody at the Asotin County Jail awaiting his initial court appearance.
