LEWISTON, ID – A man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon following reports of a shooting incident on U.S. Highway 95 on the Lewiston Hill, according to the Idaho State Police (ISP).

At approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, ISP received a 911 call reporting a white 2020 GMC Sierra pickup driving erratically southbound on the highway. The caller stated the driver was waving a handgun through the sunroof and that they believed gunfire was coming from the vehicle while it was still in Washington.

The driver allegedly later fired at the caller’s vehicle near milepost 313, near the base of Lewiston Hill.

An ISP trooper later located the vehicle in Lewiston and conducted a felony traffic stop. The driver, 58-year-old Shawn Johnson, from Sequim, Washington, was arrested without further incident.

Troopers later learned that the man was allegedly involved in a series of incidents that began in Whitman County.  Law enforcement first received a report of a driver waving a gun on State Route 26 near Dusty. Whitman County Undersheriff Chris Chapman says the driver was then seen allegedly firing shots into the air through Colfax on U.S. Highway 195. As law enforcement officers were looking for the suspect he allegedly fired additional rounds in Colton and Uniontown.

Johnson allegedly admitted to ISP troopers that he had intentionally fired his weapon.  Shell casings were reportedly recovered on US195 in Southern Whitman County.

He was booked into the Nez Perce County Jail on probable cause for aggravated assault. Further charges may be pursued by Washington State Patrol and the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office as their investigations continue.

No injuries were reported.  During the arrest and investigation, US-12 was temporarily closed at 3rd Avenue North in Lewiston.

Anyone with additional information about the incident in Idaho is asked to contact ISP District 2 at (208) 750-9300.
