OLYMPIA, WA – Governor Bob Ferguson has proclaimed August 7, 2025, as Purple Heart Recipient Recognition Day in Washington state, honoring the sacrifices of military veterans who have been wounded or killed in combat.

The proclamation, issued August 4 by the Office of the Governor in coordination with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, pays tribute to service members who have earned the Purple Heart — a military decoration originally established by George Washington as the Badge of Military Merit. The modern-day Purple Heart honors those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The state of Washington recognizes the entire month of August as Purple Heart Recognition Month, with August 7 specifically set aside to commemorate the courage and sacrifice of Purple Heart recipients. This observance stems from legislation passed by the Washington State Legislature in 1991.

According to the proclamation, Washington communities are encouraged to participate in recognition efforts through ceremonies, veteran outreach programs, and public education initiatives. Infrastructure symbols such as the Purple Heart Trail — which includes major roadways like Interstate 5 — also serve as permanent reminders of those who have paid a heavy price for freedom.

Governor Ferguson urged all Washingtonians to join in honoring veterans who have borne the physical and emotional scars of war in service to the nation.
