Washington State Launches Program to Help LGBTQ-Owned Businesses Land State Contracts

OLYMPIA, WA – Washington state has launched the LGBTQ Business Enterprise program, allowing LGBTQ+ small business owners to certify their businesses for free and access government contracts.

Governor Bob Ferguson announced the program Thursday, calling it an important step in supporting the LGBTQ community and recognizing its role in Washington’s diverse business landscape.

The Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE), which has certified small minority- and women-owned businesses for public contracting since 1983, will administer the new program. Certified LGBTQ-owned businesses will appear in the state’s business directory used by agencies, educational institutions, local governments, and prime contractors.

Washington state agencies are encouraged by leaders to contract with OMWBE-certified businesses. Starting in 2026, OMWBE will report state spending with LGBTQ-owned businesses. The office also offers certified businesses free consultations and training.

“This certification allows us to build business solutions that truly improve equity in public spending,” OMWBE Director Lekha Fernandes said.

The program is among the first statewide LGBTQ business certifications in the nation.

Matt Landers, secretary of the Washington State LGBTQ Commission, said the change follows more than a decade of community advocacy. Commission Executive Director Lisa Keating called the program another step toward reducing barriers and increasing access within state government.

To qualify, businesses must be for-profit, licensed in Washington, and at least 51% owned and operated by LGBTQ+ individuals who meet a personal net worth limit.
