BOISE, ID – Idaho drivers are paying more at the pump as the new school year gets underway. According to AAA, the state’s average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.53, up six cents from both last week and last month, though still eight cents lower than this time last year.

Nationally, gas prices have inched downward, averaging $3.14 per gallon—about a penny and a half less than a week ago and 30 cents less than a year ago. Idaho ranks seventh in the nation for highest fuel prices, with California leading at $4.50 per gallon.

AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde noted that while weekday travel may slow as families settle into school routines, weekend trips could still cause price fluctuations. “There could be a teeter totter effect on pump prices, which seems like a fitting analogy to kick off the school year,” Conde said.

Crude oil prices, which reached $70 per barrel at the end of July, have eased. West Texas Intermediate is currently trading near $64 per barrel, down $2 from last week and $4 from last month. Conde said Labor Day could be the next turning point for price relief.
