Officials say Human Activity has Sparked Over 39,000 Wildfires This Year Across U.S.

LEWISTON, ID – Human activity has ignited over 39,000 wildfires so far in 2025, consuming more than 1.6 million acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Officials emphasize that these fires are preventable and drain wildfire response resources.

Currently, 16,953 wildland firefighters and support personnel are deployed across the country to combat active fires in challenging terrain and conditions. States with the highest numbers of human-caused ignitions this year include California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Oklahoma.

The NIFC urges the public to take precautions to prevent new fires. Recommendations include properly extinguishing campfires, securing equipment to prevent sparks, and avoiding activities that could ignite fires when driving or working in rural areas.

Predictive Services at the National Interagency Coordination Center is monitoring three active fuels and fire behavior advisories covering parts of Nevada, California, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming. These advisories highlight conditions that could contribute to rapid fire growth, and residents or travelers in these areas are encouraged to adjust activities accordingly.

Support for firefighting efforts includes four U.S. military C-130 aircraft equipped with Modular Airborne Firefighting Systems (MAFFS). Two aircraft are operating from Colorado Springs, Colorado, and two from Mesa, Arizona, providing additional airtanker support when civilian aviation resources are at capacity.

Weather conditions continue to challenge firefighting efforts. Above-normal temperatures and breezy winds are forecast in the Pacific Northwest, Great Basin, central Rockies, and much of California. Relative humidity remains low, with poor overnight recovery, while monsoon moisture over parts of the Southwest brings a chance of isolated wet/dry thunderstorms and gusty outflows. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across the East, South, and Great Plains.

Daily statistics from NIFC report 34 large active fires across the country, burning a combined 734,640 acres. States reporting large fires include: Colorado (6), California (5), Arizona (5), Idaho (5), Washington (3), Utah (2), Nevada (2), New Mexico (2), Louisiana (1), Alaska (1), Oregon (1), and Wyoming (1). Three of these fires have been contained.
