Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo said the crash happened around 12:45 a.m. The driver entered the active work area, hitting several vehicles and the device, which is used to measure the density of asphalt during paving projects. The tool ensures the new pavement meets safety standards before opening lanes to traffic.

Trooper Dattilo emphasized that there is no danger to the public. The Washington State Department of Health evaluated the equipment after the crash.

The construction zone was in place for paving work. All eastbound lanes were blocked for several hours while troopers, construction crews, and a hazmat team responded to the scene. The lanes reopened later in the morning.

The driver was taken to a hospital following the arrest. No injuries were reported.
