Wrong-Way Driver Causes Crash on I-90 in Post Falls

POST FALLS, ID – Idaho State Police report that a wrong-way driver caused a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 early Thursday morning, prompting a temporary closure of the westbound lanes.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on August 14 near milepost 5, on the Spokane Street overpass. A 62-year-old Spokane Valley man was driving a maroon Dodge Caravan east in the westbound lanes when he encountered a westbound semi-truck hauling cars, driven by a 55-year-old Pennsylvania man.

The semi driver swerved to avoid a head-on collision, and the Caravan sideswiped the truck, rupturing one of its fuel tanks and spilling diesel onto the roadway. The semi caught fire and came to rest blocking both westbound lanes, while the Caravan stopped about 50 yards from the point of impact.

Kootenai County Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire, preventing damage to the trailer, but the semi was a total loss. The Caravan driver was transported to Kootenai Health with minor injuries. The semi driver, his wife, and their adult son were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

It is not yet known if impairment played a role in the crash. Westbound I-90 was closed at Spokane Street for several hours while crews cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation by Idaho State Police.
