WHITMAN COUNTY, WA – Fire crews continue to make progress on the Central Ferry Fire, which has burned an estimated 6,597 acres about 26 miles west of Pullman. The fire, which began on the afternoon of August 13, 2025, was sparked by a vehicle fire. Updated mapping accounts for recent changes in acreage, with minimal fire growth reported.
As of Friday, August 15, containment is at 40% with 127 personnel assigned to the incident. Crews completed a fire trail around the perimeter and have been checking for hot spots. No hot spots were found along the north edge, but several were located on the west and east sides. Firefighters are concentrating their mop-up work on the east side, where most of the remaining heat is located.
Weather conditions today include highs near 86 degrees and breezy southwest winds, with gusts up to 23 mph expected through Saturday. Officials caution that such winds could test containment lines.
There are currently no evacuation orders or road closures in effect. Authorities remind the public that flying drones in the fire area is prohibited, as it can halt aerial firefighting operations. Drivers traveling near the fire zone are urged to slow down, watch for fire crews and equipment, and be mindful of reduced visibility from drifting smoke.
