BONNER COUNTY, ID – The Sunset Fire, located about 25 miles north of Coeur d’Alene, grew to 2,702 acres on Friday, with the most activity along the northern perimeter, according to the Idaho Department of Lands.
Hotshot crews, supported by aerial resources, worked to construct firelines in that area to slow its advance. The fire continues to burn in heavy timber and steep terrain.
Along the southern flank, crews focused on strengthening dozer lines and began installing hose lays to provide water at the fire’s edge. Night crews are continuing line-building efforts.
The last update from officials said 295 personnel are assigned to the fire.
Structures and other values at risk remain threatened. Structure protection groups are actively assessing areas along Talache Road and Butler Creek, implementing point protection where needed. Additional crews will be assigned to support work in this area.
A Complex Incident Management Team is scheduled to in-brief Saturday afternoon and begin shadowing the current organization before taking over command.
Evacuation orders remain in effect in the area. An evacuation center has been opened at the Cocolalla Bible Camp to assist displaced residents. The Bonner County Fairgrounds are available on a limited basis to shelter evacuated livestock.
Cooperating agencies include the Idaho Department of Lands, USDA Forest Service, Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, and multiple local rural and county fire departments and EMS.
The cause of the Sunset Fire remains under investigation.
