CALDWELL, ID – A Caldwell man was arrested Monday evening after police say an 18-year-old woman was found dead inside a Blaine Street residence.

According to the Caldwell Police Department, officers responded to the 1600 block of Blaine Street shortly after 4 p.m. after dispatch received a call from a teen reporting that his father, 51-year-old Delbert Cornish, was inside the home armed with a gun.

When officers arrived, they established a perimeter and contacted the teen outside. The teen told officers that Cornish made comments about shooting a family member and tried to prevent him from escaping. Police said the teen was able to flee the home after a short struggle and call 911.

Officers entered the residence and conducted a protective sweep. Inside, they found a firearm and a deceased 18-year-old female victim.

Police used Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology to identify Cornish’s location. The search led to a home in Mountain Home, where Mountain Home Police arrested him at 7:30 p.m. without incident.

Caldwell Police detectives, with assistance from the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Lab, are processing the crime scene. The investigation remains active.

Caldwell Police thanked multiple agencies for their assistance, including the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, the Nampa Police Department K9 unit, and the Mountain Home Police Department.

“My heart is heavy, and I am deeply saddened for the family and friends affected by this horrific act of family violence,” Caldwell Police Chief Rex Ingram said in a statement. “I am thankful for the outstanding mutual aid and partnerships with our outside agencies who assisted with identifying and capturing this savage without incident.”
