LAPWAI, ID – An air quality advisory remains in effect across the Nez Perce Reservation as wildfire smoke continues to impact the region, according to the Nez Perce Tribe’s Air Quality Program.
Officials reported Monday morning that smoke conditions remain variable and may shift throughout the week depending on wildfire activity and changing wind patterns. The advisory will stay in place until Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. No burn permits issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the Nez Perce Tribe will be approved during this period.
Air quality levels across the reservation currently range from “Moderate” to “Hazardous” on the Air Quality Index (AQI). Residents are encouraged to monitor current conditions through the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map or the Idaho Smoke Blog, and to follow recommended health precautions associated with AQI levels.
Health officials emphasize that wildfire smoke poses the greatest risk to sensitive populations, including children, older adults, pregnant women, individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions, heart disease, diabetes, or those who spend extended time outdoors due to work or recreation. Under severe smoke conditions, those in sensitive groups are urged to avoid outdoor exposure and limit indoor activity, while the general public is also advised to reduce time spent outdoors.
