ASOTIN, WA – The Asotin Police Department responded Wednesday morning to a fire alarm activation at Asotin-Anatone School, just minutes before the start of classes.
The alarm sounded at approximately 7:50 a.m., prompting students and staff to evacuate to designated safety areas. Chief Monte Renzelman was present at the school during the incident, maintaining a visible law enforcement presence amid heightened safety concerns following an active shooter incident in Minneapolis earlier the same day.
After an assessment, officials determined the alarm was triggered by a system failure. A fire alarm specialist has been called in to address the issue. Police and school staff emphasized that at no point were students or staff in danger.
Chief Renzelman commended teachers for their quick actions in guiding students during the disruption, as well as parents for their patience—especially since the alarm came on the first day of school. “The safety of students and staff remained the top priority throughout the incident, and all decisions were made with their well-being in mind,” he said.
Normal operations resumed shortly after the situation was resolved. Police and school administrators plan to review safety procedures to strengthen preparedness for future incidents.
The Asotin Police Department thanked the community for its cooperation and assured parents that steps are being taken to prevent further disruptions.
