UPDATE 10:40 a.m.: WSU Police later clarified that the initial swatting call was made at 8:51 a.m. and falsely reported a man carrying an AR-15 style rifle near Holland/Terrell Library, along with alleged gunfire. The caller also claimed to be barricaded inside the library.
Officers from both WSU Police and Pullman Police quickly responded, searched the area, and confirmed there was no active threat. Because the situation was resolved before an emergency message could be issued with response instructions, only a follow-up alert was sent to reassure the campus community.
Officials noted that similar swatting calls have targeted universities nationwide, and the FBI is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
PULLMAN, WA – Washington State University police confirmed Thursday morning that a report of an active shooter at the Compton Union Building was false.
According to WSU Alerts, Whitcom 911 received a swatting call around 9:11 a.m. on August 28, reporting an active shooter inside the CUB. Officers responded immediately and determined there was no threat to campus safety.
Authorities say the call was a case of swatting, in which a false emergency report is made to prompt a law enforcement response. Police emphasized that there is no active shooter at WSU Pullman and that campus operations are continuing as normal.
