NEWPORT, WA – A 61-year-old man being held at the Pend Oreille County Jail died Thursday morning after being found unresponsive in his cell, according to the Newport Police Department.
Police said jail staff discovered the inmate was not breathing around 11:42 a.m. on August 28. Medical personnel and corrections officers attempted lifesaving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office responded and will conduct an examination to determine the cause and manner of death. Officials noted that the case remains under investigation, and no additional information is available at this time.
