Idaho Fish and Game Shares Key September Hunting and Fishing Dates

BOISE, ID – Idaho Fish and Game has released a list of important hunting and fishing dates to help sportsmen plan for the busy month of September. From controlled tag sales to season openers, officials say staying on top of deadlines and regulations is essential for those heading outdoors.

The month begins on September 1 with the opening of several seasons, including dove, sandhill crane, and early goose hunts. Fall coho salmon and fall steelhead harvests also open that day in most rivers. Fish and Game reminds anglers to review the 2025–27 fishing seasons and rules booklet for details on which rivers allow steelhead harvests.

Chronic Wasting Disease Awareness Week is scheduled for September 15–21, focusing on education and prevention of the fatal disease that affects deer, elk, and moose. Hunters will also have an opportunity to purchase returned controlled hunt tags on September 18 at 10 a.m. MDT.

Additional hunting opportunities begin September 20, with the opening of chukar, gray partridge, California quail, bobwhite quail, and sage-grouse seasons. To close out the month, Fish and Game has designated September 27–28 as the Youth, Veterans, and Active Military Waterfowl Hunting Weekend.

Officials urge hunters, anglers, and trappers to always check season rules and booklets for species-specific regulations and restrictions before heading out.
