LEWISTON, ID – The Lewiston School District Board of Directors has voted to eliminate “Pay to Participate” fees at Lewiston High School, ending a program that required students to pay for athletic involvement.
The change expands on a previous decision to remove participation fees at the middle school level. District officials said the move is intended to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to join athletics without financial barriers.
“We believe every student should have the chance to participate fully in school activities without barriers,” Superintendent Tim Sperber said. “By removing these fees, we’re making sure all students can take part in the programs that enrich their education and help them grow.”
District leaders noted that participation in athletics is linked to stronger student engagement, school pride, and the development of skills such as teamwork and responsibility.
The board’s decision reflects the district’s mission of “ensuring high levels of learning for all students” and affirms that education extends beyond the classroom.
