LEWISTON, ID – The Alice Whitman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is leading local efforts to commemorate Constitution Week, set for September 17–23. The annual observance recognizes the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787 and was first established as a national celebration in 1956 after a Daughters of the American Revolution-led campaign.

This year’s events include official proclamations from several cities, counties, and school districts across Idaho and Washington, along with community activities such as Bells Across America on September 17. The bell-ringing ceremony will be held at New Connections United Methodist Church in Clarkston at 1 p.m., coinciding with a nationwide observance.

Local schools are also participating. Members of the Alice Whitman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution provided pocket copies of the Constitution, flags, and educational resources to fifth-grade students at Highland Elementary in Clarkston. Displays are available at the Lewiston City Library, the Asotin County Library, and And Books Too in Clarkston. Washington State University will host a public reading of the Constitution on September 17 at Terrell Library in Pullman.

Alice Whitman Chapter Regent Suzanne Grove said the celebration is meant to remind Americans of the Constitution’s role in protecting freedoms. “It should always be celebrated and cherished for what it provides to us on a daily basis,” she said.
