Western Washington Homeowner Fatally Shoots Suspected Intruder

SPANAWAY, WA – The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning after a homeowner reported shooting an intruder.

Deputies responded at about 1:45 a.m. on September 14 after a 51-year-old Spanaway homeowner called 911 to report the incident. When deputies arrived, they found a 36-year-old man with a single gunshot wound on the back porch. Deputies attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, prior to the shooting the suspect had been captured on several homeowners’ cameras walking around properties in the neighborhood.

Officials said the homeowner has been cooperative with investigators, and the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was in self-defense. No arrests have been made.

Detectives and forensic investigators remained on scene Sunday as the investigation continued.
