MOUNT ST. HELENS, WA – Strong winds near Mount St. Helens on Tuesday lifted ash from the 1980 eruption, leading some in the area to believe the volcano may have become active again.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, easterly to southeasterly winds picked up loose volcanic ash and carried it west-northwest. The resuspended ash was also reported by commercial pilots flying in the area.
USGS said the activity is not the result of new volcanic activity and occasionally occurs during periods of high winds and dry, snow-free conditions.
The agency confirmed that no eruption is in progress. Mount St. Helens remains at Aviation Color Code Green and Volcano Alert Level Normal.
Officials warned that resuspended volcanic ash should still be considered hazardous and could damage aircraft.
