Idaho Releases Advanced Nuclear Strategic Framework

BOISE, ID – Governor Brad Little announced Thursday that the State of Idaho has released a new Advanced Nuclear Strategic Framework aimed at guiding the future of nuclear energy in the state.

The plan was developed by the Idaho Strategic Energy Alliance in collaboration with the Governor’s Office of Energy and Mineral Resources. It outlines strategies for advancing next-generation nuclear technologies that officials say are intended to be safe, reliable, affordable, and sustainable.

The framework highlights several of Idaho’s existing strengths, including the Idaho National Laboratory’s history of nuclear research, workforce development programs at state universities and colleges, and mineral resources such as thorium and uranium. It also points to industry partnerships and regional collaborations with neighboring states as important components of the effort.

Recommendations within the plan include creating a State Energy Fund to support nuclear development and using the state’s newly established Strategic Permitting, Efficiency, and Economic Development Council to help streamline project approvals.

Supporters of the framework describe it as a step toward strengthening energy security and attracting private investment to Idaho’s energy sector. State officials also emphasize its potential to expand workforce opportunities and ensure long-term power reliability for residents and businesses.

The full Advanced Nuclear Strategic Framework is available on the Governor’s website.
